    Whilst I think voting is important and part of that unwritten civil contract we all have with the community we inhabit, abstention is a valid democratic act.

    Jehovah’s Witnesses do not vote because of their beliefs. Whilst you can disagree with them, you cannot think that are not entitled to follow their religion. Such a scheme as fining non-voters would seem them fined for their religious views – surely an infringement of their human rights?

    If you want young people to vote (and I do) then I would suggest two simple steps:

    Votes at sixteen
    Voting via the internet
